History
The history of Alderwood dates back to the early 1800s, when the land was part of Colonel Samuel Smith’s estate and largely used for farming. In 1918, the area was promoted as New Toronto Heights (also known as New Toronto Park), attracting new residents to what was then a rural community.
The construction of the Queen Elizabeth Way in the 1930s separated Alderwood from the rest of Etobicoke, and after the Second World War, European immigration spurred rapid growth. The community officially adopted the name Alderwood, inspired by the alder trees that grew abundantly in the area. Interestingly, the name also echoes the Indigenous meaning of Etobicoke—“the place where the alder trees grow.”
Today, Alderwood has evolved into a thriving suburban neighborhood, blending residential streets, local shops, and green spaces, while retaining the peaceful charm of its roots.
